About Orlando Gold Refinery
Product Type
The Orlando Refinery operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. It has 280 workers and processes about of coal per day for a capacity of 6,000 barrels per day. The refinery produces gasoline, diesel fuel, and refined asphalt products.
These products are shipped throughout the Southeastern United States via significant pipelines. According to the Energy Information Administration, it is the only CTL refinery in Florida.
Owner
It is owned and operated by Lakeland Industries, a Delaware corporation. The refinery is located on the banks of Lake Russell, right next to Interstate 4. It is also close to I-4 and the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. The company's headquarters are located between Tampa, Florida, and Orlando, Florida.
Rating
It has received the following ratings from the American Petroleum Institute: 4-star (highest) in reliability and 5-star (highest) in safety. The refinery has incorporated several environmental protection programs, including equipment to clean up spills and pollution controls.
Services
The refinery provides many services for the community. It has partnered with local businesses to build a museum on CTL processing. The "factory tour" is free and takes about two hours.
It offers fossil-fuel power and a host of other attractions to help raise awareness about the importance of reducing dependence on foreign oil sources. It also makes technical services available to both customers and the public.
Marketing
Lakeland Industries is also heavily involved in marketing its product. Lakeland conducts media and public relations campaigns to promote the sale of fuels. It has conducted seminars, trade shows, and events with local officials and companies.
Environmental Issues
Environmental issues are also an essential part of the CTL process. The Orlando Refinery controls emissions by burning coal in a boiler. It then uses heat to turn oil into gasoline. Coal fires produce tons of air pollution each year. The Orlando Refinery reduces overall emissions by more than 70%.
Strategy
The strategy of Lakeland Industries is to be the leader in alternative fuel technology worldwide. Lakeland follows strict guidelines and regulations regarding emissions control, noise, and water pollution. It also follows a continuing research program that increases technology and efficiency.
Pros & Cons of Orlando Gold Refinery
Pros:
Energy independence
CTL technology allows the United States to obtain more energy from its natural resources. This is important because the U.S. imports more than 60% of its fuel supplies - oil and gas- to power our economy and transportation systems. By using CTL, we are reducing our dependence on foreign energy sources.
Safety
The CTL process has many safety features, including several redundant safety systems and backup power for emergencies. This is a crucial feature because it means the company can quickly restart the process if there is a fire or other problem.
Pollution Control
CTL refining produces less pollution than coal-fired power plants and uses less energy. This reduces air and water contamination and thus improves public health and safety. It also reduces costs to our economy by lowering the need for costly repairs of air, land, and water pollution control systems.
Job Creation
CTL technology creates several high-paying jobs. The Orlando Refinery is an example of how CTL production can provide economic benefits to the communities where development takes place.
Education
CTL allows people with no previous knowledge of the process to learn more. This can be a significant factor because this is not only a business but also an educational opportunity. It is possible to get involved in the CTL industry through volunteer committees and job training.
Cons:
Cost
CTL technology is still somewhat expensive. It is more economical in large-scale projects like the international oil company Shell's solar thermal plant in California. The costs eventually will drop as technology improves and refining gets more efficient.
Technological Problems
There have been some problems with the efficiency of the process. Sometimes a chemical reaction takes place that can cause explosions. Coal is also not an environmentally safe fuel, and there are concerns about how much emissions from coal-burning contribute to pollution and global warming.
